Residential locksmithing spent decades with a phone script that worked because the failure modes were mechanical. Someone is locked out, someone lost a key, someone wants a rekey, someone bent a key in a cylinder. Four branches, all physical, all resolved by a technician with a pick set and a key machine.

1. Dead battery lockout. The most common by a distance, and the most seasonal — cold snaps knock marginal cells over in clusters. The lock is fine. If the door has a physical override and the caller has the key, it resolves without anyone driving. If the lock is keyless-only or the override key was never taken out of the box, it becomes a real service call, and on some models an exterior contact will accept a jump from a nine-volt battery or a power bank.

2. Forgotten, wiped or expired user code. The caller cannot get in, and the cause is administrative rather than mechanical. Somebody deleted the code, an auto-expiring guest code lapsed, or the master code was set at installation by a person who no longer lives there. Whether it is fixable on the phone depends entirely on whether anyone present has admin access.

3. Lost pairing after a Wi-Fi or phone change. New router, new SSID, new phone, factory-reset hub, or an account migration. The lock still works locally on codes and keys; what stopped is remote control. Callers describe this as the lock being broken, and it is not.

4. A failed or stalled firmware update. Less common, more serious, and one where the honest answer is often the manufacturer rather than a locksmith. If the lock is bricked mid-update, the fix path runs through the maker's support process or an RMA, and a truck roll produces nothing but a diagnosis.

5. Motor jam, misalignment or a bolt that will not throw. The genuinely mechanical one, and usually not the lock's fault. Doors move seasonally, strikes shift, hinges sag, and a deadbolt a human used to shove home with a hip check now stalls a small motor and reports a fault. 7. New install, retrofit or upgrade quote. Someone bought a smart lock and cannot fit it, or wants advice on which one suits their door. High-value, low-urgency, and lost more often than any other type because it is the call most likely to reach voicemail on a weekday afternoon.

Why the lockout script fails on these calls

A conventional residential intake asks where you are, what kind of lock it is, and whether you have identification. All three are necessary and none of them separate a dead battery from a stripped motor.

The deeper problem is that the script has no branch for a caller who is not locked out. Is it keyed, and is there an override key. A keypad deadbolt with a physical cylinder and a key in the caller's pocket is a different call from a keyless-only lock. Ask both halves — whether the lock has a keyway at all, and whether the caller can actually put hands on that key right now. The second half is where the answer usually collapses.

Connectivity. Wi-Fi built in, Z-Wave or Zigbee through a hub, Bluetooth-only from a phone, or a bridge accessory. This determines whether a remote unlock is even theoretically possible and whether the caller's complaint is a lock fault or a network fault.

Door material and prep. Wood, fiberglass, metal, or a steel frame in a multifamily building. Bore size, backset, door thickness, and whether the current hardware is standard. Who has admin access. Does the person on the phone hold the app account, know the master code, and have authority over the property? This one question resolves the ownership issue and the phone-fix question simultaneously.

To all of that, add the field this trade has been slow to use: a photo. Text the caller a link, have them photograph the exterior of the lock, the interior assembly, and the label inside the battery compartment. A photo of a model sticker is worth more than a caller reading letters over a bad connection, and it converts an uncertain dispatch into a certain one. The free-fix problem, stated honestly

A meaningful share of smart-lock calls are a battery change, a re-pair, or a code re-entry that the customer can do in five minutes with instructions. This creates a genuine business dilemma, and pretending otherwise is how shops end up handling it badly.

Dispatch for them and you lose money. A technician drives across town, changes four AA cells, and either charges a service call for a battery — which produces a bad review — or eats it, which produces a loss.

Talk them through it for free and you lose the ticket. You have solved the problem, spent phone time, and gained nothing but goodwill that may never convert.

There is no clever way out of that. There is only a stated policy, applied consistently, communicated on the phone before anyone commits:

  • A service-call or trip fee that is quoted up front and applies regardless of outcome. Simple, defensible, and it filters out the callers whose problem is a battery. Say the number early; a caller who hears it and still books wants a technician.
  • Or a triage script that deliberately solves the trivial cases for free — battery, jump terminal, re-pair, manual override — and books everything else. This is the goodwill play. Both are legitimate. The failure mode is having neither, so that the outcome depends on who answers and what mood they are in. One boundary is not negotiable in either model. Whoever answers the phone must not attempt a factory reset, a code purge or a firmware recovery over the phone. A reset can wipe every code in the house, including the ones a landlord issued to other people, and a half-finished recovery can brick a lock that was merely offline. A tenant may live at the property and hold no admin rights. A landlord may hold the app account and not live there. A separating couple may both be on the deed while only one controls the codes, and that call is one where a locksmith can do real harm by acting fast. So the intake asks two separate questions rather than one. Who lives here, and who controls the lock. When those answers point at different people, the correct behavior is to capture both and escalate to a human before dispatch — not to refuse, and not to proceed.
